One For The Lovers: Progressive New Take on the Classic ‘Date Night’
Sultry subterranean cocktail bar Purple Pit has further cemented itself as one of Melbourne’s most progressive new venues with its fresh take on the classic ‘date night’ concept; a weekly series For The Lovers - whatever that looks like for you.
The new Tuesday night series offers a sexy yet safe space for lovers of all kinds to sequester from city life and enjoy each other’s company over candlelight, with a bespoke set menu exclusive to the series offering aphrodisiacs like oysters with lemon emulsion and saffron oil, to a carafe of martini and more.
Just like a quality cocktail which is only as good as the sum of its parts, Purple Pit has perfected each element of its ‘date night’ to get the mood right. From the bar’s suave design, to the intricacy of the drinks, the suitability of the soundtrack and a style of service that truly welcomes everyone, it’s a mix that’s hard to come by under one roof, especially at the start of the week.
Purple Pit co-owner and hospitality hit-maker Joe Jones said a genuine sense of inclusivity and an ability to offer a malleable experience was key in curating the new offering.
“I think there’s a handful of good date spots that already exist (at least to me anyway, I’m fairly easily pleased ha - if it’s kind of dark and cool and the drinks are cold that’s really enough for most occasions) but some of them are pretty financially inaccessible or intimidating to a lot of people,” said Joe.
“Dating is sort of more ambiguous and fraught with opinion than ever. It’s super under the spotlight and everyone’s got their different take on how it should be and what makes it good or not and so on, so I think offering an incredibly malleable experience (in the sense that it can be as formal or as loose and casual as you want) is an approach we knew was important to take.
“In the true sense of any real public bar, (and it should go without saying, really) it’s paramount that it’s a safe, inclusive place for everyone in regards to sharing a night out with their partner in whatever format that comes, and I think all our staff are pretty great at reading the tables, ensuring that safety, and looking after your every request.
“Our offering works for partners who need a romantic night out, or someone trying to impress someone new on a first date. I also think sometimes the whole ‘date night’ thing can exclude all the lonely hearts out there - I’d be psyched to see people here with their friends, family, (themselves?) - whoever.”
The set menu starts at an affordable $95 - the first course offers Oysters with lemon emulsion & saffron oil (4), Hash Browns with Cafe de Paris mayo & smoked salmon roe (2) and 250ml Carafe of Martini - Gin or Vodka, Dry Vermouth & Orange Bitters.
The second course comprises Baked Rigatoni alla Vodka with Pecorino & Chilli oil (exclusive to Tuesdays, for now) and two glasses of White/Rose/Red wine. Guests can also select from a range of additional openers like RIva Prosecco, Grower Champagne or Frozen Belvedere & Caviar and afters like House Raspberry Amaro, Baby Butterfly or the Whiskey Selection.
“In essence, rigatoni alla vodka is a timeless classic that demands a spot at the table with its rich flavours, comforting texture, and versatile nature,” said Joe.
“Moreover, the appeal of the dish extends beyond its exquisite taste. It's something that embodies comfort and indulgence - two excellent things to be sharing with someone, I think.
“Whether enjoyed as the centrepiece of a celebratory feast, or just any day ending with a ‘y’- this beloved pasta dish continues to captivate hearts and palates around the world - not just at the Purple Pit.”
Beyond the table, guests can expect to remove themselves from the hustle and bustle of the city by entering the bar via a quaint Collins Street entrance, nestled beneath Joseph Reed's masterful gothic re-imagination of the 1867 St. Michael's Uniting Church.
An overview of the bar can first be had from the mezzanine before descending the stairs and being seated. White linen, flickering candlelight and soft textures contrast the bar’s black mirrored cladding, providing a warm touch and a perfect view before table service begins.
“Whilst we always provide a menu as a snapshot of what we’re drinking at the moment, if you’d prefer to let us handle it all with some light direction we’re always up to the task,” said Joe.
“From there, all you need to do is enjoy your guests' company, take in the sounds and flavours distinctive in shaping what the Purple Pit is, and let us know what you need to make whatever your version of a good time is a success.”
